1. Who are you? Tell us a bit about your label!

We’re Strut. Founded by Quinton Scott in 1999 and now owned by Berlin-based indie !K7 and we release a mix of compilations, original albums and new studio albums. 2. Can you suggest 5 of your favourite artists from your label for someone who may not have heard of you before, to listen to? Mulatu Astatke, Flock, Nubiyan Twist, Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids, Flora Purim

2. Is there a specific style of music that your label represents, or are there various? If so, can you name the main genres?

It’s a wide-ranging catalogue mainly covering jazz, African, Latin and Caribbean sounds through to soul, disco and post-punk.

3. What do you enjoy most about working in music?

The people primarily – it’s a great community and we meet so many creative and very unique, inspiring artists through our work. It has always felt a privilege to make available great old and new music to the wider world.

4. How has the pandemic changed the way you run your label?

It has become a lot harder in our area of the market. We have to pick and choose projects that we take on very carefully now – the pandemic and the various issues with vinyl manufacture have meant that budgets are now much tighter.

5. What are you most looking forward to this upcoming year? (e.g. any specific artists / releases / tours you’re looking forward to?)

So much good music happening! During June, would pick out Patrice Rushen back live in the UK, Max Richter at Royal Hospital in Chelsea and can’t wait to catch Diana Ross at the 02 after two postponements.
